Once again, he takes no pride in having done so, likely because a kid in his village was covering for it (and the Shade will not attack you). In a sidequest, he seeks out a little Shade that's infiltrated his village and kills it.His conversation with Weiss afterwards implies that he's not proud of his role in enabling Gideon's madness. He's visibly unsettled when Gideon begins gloating over Beepy's damaged body (right after Nier defeated him and killed Kalil), and tries to calm him down.Curious Qualms of Conscience: Though for the most part he's unapologetically ruthless in killing Shades there are a few instances where his actions give him pause, even prior to The Reveal:.There wasn't any reward for finding the brothers' mother, or helping Emil. He sort of insists he doesn't do this, saying it's all for Yonah, but Weiss comments otherwise. Chronic Hero Syndrome: Has a habit of helping out anyone who needs him to earn some money.Played with in Ending E, which in its original novel form combines most of Ending D but allows a new him that does not know Kainé or the others to be born, while in the playable version added to the remake he is outright brought Back from the Dead. Casting a Shadow: Nier's magic tends to be focused around darkness.Berserk Button: Be a Shade a sidequest even has him mention that he doesn't care if a Shade is just minding its own business and not attacking, he'll still cut it down.Ending E alleviates this a tiny bit by allowing him to spend the rest of his days peacefully with his loved ones, even if Yonah has little time left and humanity is still essentially doomed. Even worse, it's implied Yonah had long accepted her condition and would've preferred Nier to spend as much time with her as possible rather than constantly leaving her and going on adventures. The most he ends up accomplishing is getting to see Yonah one more time and "rescue" her from the Shadowlord, but her time is running out either way, and she is in fact only closer to death now that she's been cut off from the Shadowlord's Maso supply. Nier is being sent on a wild goose chase based on a fake premise which he wholeheartedly believes in to the very end. All for Nothing: Yonah cannot be saved, since there is no cure for the Black Scrawl.By than Kainé is technically a 25-year-old-woman, with a mind and body of a 20-year-old thanks to being petrified by Emil before the Time Skip. 'Brother' Nier is only a year younger than Kainé, but the events of Ending E create a complicated situation where he comes back from non-existence as a 16-year-old-boy. Because of this, the only time he shows any visible romantic attraction towards Kainé is in Ending C, when he kisses her upon mercy killing her. 'Father' Nier is much older than her and a widower. Age-Gap Romance: Heavily downplayed with Kainé.Tropes associated with both versions of the protagonist: Although they're very similar, there are some notable differences between them. Between the Japanese and English releases, there are two separate renditions of him - 'Brother' protagonist and 'Father' protagonist.
